Vishnu Sahasranamam in the Anushasan Parva of the Mahabharata is very famous. It starts with the words VAISHAMPAYANA UVACHA. (वैशंपायन उवाच).
I used to wonder why Sri Vyasa had chosen to commence such a beautiful and exalted Hymn with a dull looking name?
But I was proved wrong.
An analysis of the name VAISHAMPAYANA will explain the same.
Vayam (वयं)+ Sham (शं)+ Paayana (पायन)
वयं meaning "We"
शं meaning "Bliss or Happiness"
पायन meaning "a person who gives drink"
VAISHAMPAYANA would then mean
A PERSON WITH WHOM WE DRINK BLISS
or One who makes us drink Bliss.
Such is the Glory of His name.
